Veterinary surveillance can be used to increase understanding of endemic diseases, detect or monitor outbreaks of exotic disease, identify emerging diseases, support return to disease freedom after an outbreak, and support prevention and control of specific pathogens.

Surveillance is a relatively recent addition to the EPIC portfolio. The aim of this work is to inform the more effective collection and interpretation of veterinary surveillance data by:

  1. Adding value to existing data collection
  2. Developing statistical approaches to analyse and integrate surveillance data
  3. Seeking early warning of changes in population characteristics
  4. Developing risk-based approaches to surveillance
